Sony Xperia Z1

4 out of 5 stars by 2 reviews
The Sony Xperia Z1 is the newest upgrade from Sony, and its latest flagship device. This stylish smartphone offers powerful processing, glossy design and all the high-quality functionality you’d expect from a premium handset, all in a sleek waterproof package. The original Sony Xperia, launched in February, was a great phone, but the enhancements on offer from the Xperia Z1 set this smartphone apart from the rest.

Look and Feel
The Xperia Z1 looks and feels sleek and chic with a smooth front and glossy back. The phone appears thin and fragile but has for more resilience than you’d expect. The handset can take falls to the ground with less risk of damage than rival phones thanks to an extension in the plastic sides over the glass allowing for shock absorbency. The chassis has been upgraded from the Xperia Z to an aluminium build, with smoother, rounder edges and feels cool to the touch. Sony has had the clever idea of placing the power button on the centre-side of the phone rather than the usual placement on the top, allowing you to press the button where you fingers naturally rest on the phone. The key feature of the phone is its ruggedness; the Xperia Z1 takes the waterproof and dustproof elements of the Xperia Z to a new level, allowing for functionality at a depth of 1.5m underwater for up to 30 minutes.

Display Features
The 5-inch screen on the Xperia Z1 displays full HD at 1920 x 1080 (441-ppi) with incredible colour sharpness thanks to its Triluminous LCD technology. The display is particularly impressive when viewing videos on the phone in high definition, when the sharp edges and contrasts can really come alive. This display technology rivals that of Samsung’s AMOLED offering, and may even be stronger than the HTC Super LCD 3, depending on your preferences.

Camera Quality
The Xperia Z1 comes with a major upgrade to the camera quality of the Xperia Z, offering a high-end 20.7 megapixel lens that produces incredible results, making this phone a strong competitor to the Nokia Lumia devices and a great choice for photography fans. The camera app comes built-in with plenty of features, including smile detection, burst mode, and a variety of flash options to customise your shots. Thanks to the waterproofing on the Z1 you can also capture photos underwater, which should make for some cool holiday snaps.

Battery Power
The Xperia Z1 packs in a 3,000mAH battery which Sony claims will get you up to 880 hours of standby and 110 hours of talk time from the phone; a pretty impressive result. The Z1 also includes some useful power saving features to help preserve your battery, and informs you which apps are draining your battery at particular times.

Processing Power
The Xperia Z1 beats its predecessor in power, with a new 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM greatly improving the overall performance of the device. This is the fastest speed you’ll get on a mobile today, and makes for a seriously quick and effortless user experience.

Multi-Media
The Z1 includes Movies, Playstation Mobile and Walkman on the Home screen, so you can explore your media options quickly, with instant payment options available through the Sony “wallet.” The variety available is huge, allowing you to download plenty of music to add to your collection. The video app lets you to play back videos and movies easily on the vibrant screen, and allows you to watch the whole film once the first few minutes have loaded up.

Internet Browsing
Google’s Chrome browser is built into the Xperia Z1 and runs essentially the same as it does on your desktop; it can even sync with your desktop Chrome to save your tabs onto your mobile, making for a cohesive browsing experience. Thanks to the speedy processor, the pages load incredibly quickly, and everything looks clear and easy to read thanks to the phone’s display quality.
