LG Optimus 4X HD

4.5 out of 5 stars by 1 reviews
LG might be best known for their televisions, yet their mobile phone offerings provide tough competition for fellow South Korean market leader Samsung. The LG Optimus 4X HD is no exception to this rule, with an amazingly rich HD 4.7 inch screen, quad-core processor and great all round performance. It's a great package, and one that more than competes with the best from better known smartphone brands commonly available in the UK.

Where this excels: The Screen

It's little surprise that a company which made its name creating big television screens have created the best smartphone phone displays. With a 1280 x 720 pixel 4.7 inch display, giving a pixel density almost as high as the iPhone at 312 pixels per inch, the screen offers enough pixels that you won't even be able to tell them apart from each other. The screen has comes with amazing IPS technology allowing you to view the screen from any angle, and includes a gigantic 16 million colours. Whether you're watching films, browsing the net or just reply to a text the screen quality will blow you away.

Past the Speed Limit

The time gap between the first dual core processor phone being launched and LG bringing out this quad core device was short. LG clearly understood where added performance would come from, and have added on an extra two cores without compromising GHz - the phone runs a full four 1.5 GHz Nvidia made cores. These run at record speeds meaning there's not a task where this phone doesn't outperform earlier rivals, whether it's browsing several image heavy sites at once or playing the latest Android games with 3D graphics.

Strike a Pose

There was a time when camera phone photos were something of a faux pas thanks to the low quality shots even when the phone claimed a high megapixel count. That changes with the LG Optimus 4X HD which takes photos better than you'd see on any dedicated handheld camera. With an amazing 8 megapixel camera on the back, combined with LED flash, and a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera, this is the perfect phone for amateur photographers. The rear camera can also take Full 1080p HD at 30 frames per second, which is better than many camcorders.

Under the Hood

The phone comes with a great battery which outperforms many of the batteries in rival Android phones. With 2150 mAh this lasts for almost 11 hours of talk time and over a month of standby time. There's 16 GB of internal storage for apps, music, photos and more, plus a MicroSD card slot allowing you to add another 64 GB of storage should you choose to. The RAM is a perfectly respectable 1 GB and the phone can achieve a maximum speed of 21 Mbps over 3G. There's also fourth generation Bluetooth, WiFi, NFC, a stereo quality FM radio and all the sensors you'd expect in a good quality smartphone.

Software

The LG Optimus 4X HD comes pre-installed with the Android operating system with LG skinning which add cool new features such as Tag+ stickers that put the phone into different modes depending on where you're located. There's also new sharing features enabling you to utilise the new NFC chip.

Is this the phone for you?

If you're willing to look past the big name brands (Samsung and Apple) and instead opt for raw power, great design and all round brilliant feature set then LG is the company for you. The Optimus 4X HD might not be LG's best model anymore, yet the benefit from this is that the phone no longer has the high end price tag it once did. When pitted against similarly priced phones you won't find any with the power, the camera or the display of this handset.
